Enviro USA • Nov 26, 2015

pollution        A Superfund site is any land in the United States that has been contaminated by hazardous waste and identified by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as a candidate for cleanup because it poses a risk to human health and/or the environment.

The EPA uses the to program to identify, investigate and clean up uncontrolled or abandoned hazardous waste sites throughout the United States.

If you wish to locate a superfund close to you visit the NPL Superfund: The National Priorities List is a list of the most hazardous waste sites that have been identified by Superfund/ CERCLIS where long-term remedial response actions can only be conducted.

The National Priorities List (NPL) is the list of hazardous waste sites in the United States eligible for long-term remedial action (cleanup) financed under the federal Superfund program. Congress created the Superfund in 1980 to pay for the cleanup of the country’s most hazardous waste sites after toxic waste from manufacturing and industrial facilities polluted the land and air.

The state with the most amount of Superfunds is California with a whopping 3731. San Francisco has over 600 by itself. With California pushing the green initiative it is no wonder that they have the most amount of Superfund programs. The runner up is Pennsylvania with 3350 followed by Texas with 2877. There are a total of 10,426 Active right now with many that are completed.

Human-made or anthropogenic environmental hazards involve a failure of a human-made system. Pollution, hazardous waste, unsafe storage tanks, unmanaged factories, and chemical spills are some examples. These hazards have the potential to threaten the surrounding natural environment and adversely affect people’s health. It is important we educate our youth in taking care of this world we live in if we want it to survive our grandchildren. Programs such as this will help us succeed in that goal! The next time you go into town and the air changes and trash litters the ground ask yourself, what can I do to help?
