Why should you winterize your building?

Enviro USA • Dec 21, 2017

When winter strikes there are many things you should worry about.

The following are some of the issues that can arise and what can be done to help.

  • Icy buildup on stairs – Can cause many injuries including Muscle and ligament sprains, Herniated disks, compression fractures. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that about 1 million Americans are injured, and 17,000 people die, as a result of slip and fall injuries every year.  CDC Link to slips and falls

  • Frozen pipes – If your pipes freeze it can cost thousands of dollars’ worth of damage to your building such as flooding, damaged walls and flooring which both can lead to dangerous mold.  CDC link about mold

  • Changing HVAC filters – You must have your filters replaced especially during the winter months. Not only will your electric bill stay down but if your filter gets clogged it could lead to expensive repairs and even worse it can release carbon monoxide into your building.

  • HVAC Testing – It is always good to have your HVAC system checked every season. Having it checked can prevent electrical fires, make sure there are no carbon monoxide leaks and calibrate your thermostat.  HVAC Testing Wiki link

  • Snow Removal – Clearing your parking lot and sidewalks means employees and customers can get to your building. Also this makes your site safer for everyone with less car accidents and slip and falls. Snow removal from the roof of your building is also very important a roof can handle 20 pounds of snow per sq foot, after that it can cause your roof to cave in.

  • Gutter Cleaning – Gutter’s aren’t usually first thing on someone’s mind but in winter if your gutter is clogged it can mean water damage to your building. It can also mean big icicles which can fall and injure someone seriously.

  • Pipe Insulation – Insulating your pipes not only helps from them freezing over but it also helps retain heat in the water.

  • Trimming your trees – Diseased or awkwardly growing branches can snap under the weight of ice and snow causing significant damage to your building.

It is always a good idea to be prepared for the winter months. Not only for the safety of your building but also for the people who work and shop there.
