Salt Removal

Enviro USA • Jan 08, 2020

Today I am going to talk about ice salt removal from commercial flooring.

Everyone dreads winter due to the Ice Melt that gets tracked into their business. It makes your floors look dirty and gritty and usually leaves a white powdery residue on your floors.

If left unattended for too long the ice melt can severely damage your floors. Calcium Chloride or Magnesium Chloride can leave a residue that is oily which can make your floor slippery and also damage the finish on your hard flooring.

Ice melt is estimated to cause $5 billion of damage to roads, sidewalks and additional infrastructure that it’s applied to. Ice melt is corrosive, so in addition to the ridding of snow and ice by lowering its melting point, it also eats holes in roads, concrete and rusts the undercarriages of cars. So it’s no surprise the havoc it can cause on your floors.

Before the winter months happen it is a good idea to add an extra protective layer of finish on your flooring to help keep the finish looking it’s best. You can also add ice mats and scrapers to help protect your floors and customers.

Now on to hard wood flooring and ice melt. Wooden floors are even worse; ice melt’s corrosive nature means that moisture from snow or slush will seep into wooden floors, causing deterioration and warping. Ice melt needs to be cleaned up as soon as possible.

If your floor has been damaged due to the ice melt you might have to consider refinishing your hardwood flooring or replacement.

Then there are carpeted floors you have to think about. Carpeted floors run the risk of the ice melt embedding into the fibers.

The best way to clean ice melt out of the carpeting is to have your carpets cleaned by hot water extraction which deep cleans the fibers to release the soil and soaked up ice melt.
